THE BELIEVER, THE GRACE, THE SPIRITUAL GIFTS
Text: Ephesians 4: 7 - 16
Today we look at the five fold ministries of the church through which Christ expects that His body be built up and prepared for works of service ( vs11-12). It is very interesting to note that though we are not saved by works ( Ephesians 2:8-9) yet the primary reason for our salvation is for us to be fit to do the good works prepared in advance for us by the father (Eph 2:9).
Today we see that one of the ways through which we can do this work is by allowing ourselves to be built up in faith through others whom God have blessed with special gifts. There is need therefore that every believer submits to the authority of those God has appointed into these five ministries for our edification, equipping and growth.
Verse 11 outlines them as; apostles, prophets, Evangelists, pastors and teachers. The aim according to verse 12 is to prepare God's people for works of service so that the body of Christ may be built up (NIV). These ministerial gifts are always present in the various denominations. But the more important part is how the believer can benefit from them. We cannot go far if we do not submit to these elders in the faith whom God have specially endowed with the rare gifts of divine revelations, wisdom and knowledge in various aspects of the faith. Their major duty is to build up the church. No matter the denomination they or us belong to, we can always find a way to benefit from their teaching.
On the other hand, it is sad that some people who claim to be called into these ministries are fake. Many are not called. They call themselves. They resort to all sorts of means to do whatever fake works and miracles they do. These group are many in number globally. Nevertheless, by their fruit we shall know them. We can always discern the spirit behind each ministry by asking the holy spirit. The gifts are not given for the amassing of wealth but for the benefit of believers. That believers will be thoroughly equipped for good works and not be tossed about by every wind of doctrine.
