NEVER DOUBT GOD
Text: Luke 1:18-25
About this time in history, God remembered his faithful servant Zechariah. He was a pastor, his wife the daughter of a pastor. Apparently, they have both known the lord from their youths. This means they kept the faith and were blameless. However, all things didn't go very well with them as expected. Yet, their hearts were fixed; it stayed on the lord because they trust in him.
So, firstly, the lord gave them peace and joy even in their predicament. They quieted their hearts like a weaned child and accepted their situation. Hence they could continue to love and serve the lord with all their heart, soul and strength. They have resignedly accepted their fate in God.
But guess what? God wasn't done with them. Even though they have found peace in their predicament and have continued to serve the lord without wavering (not in sorrow or bitterness but in plain pure joy of having the privilege to render service to God) God didn't settle down and resign to their fate. He was ready to do what he has planned to do before time, more so, because this couple have been found worthy and faithful to be the parents of Christ' forerunner.
In our sufferings and challenges, when we pray and pray and nothing happens we should be able to ask God; what do you want me to learn from this situation? Some challenges that come to us are there to purify us and take away the dross of our flesh life which we are oblivious to. When we resign our fates to God, he creates an enabling strength in us to help us pass through that phase of our lives and still have his peace.
So because the lord has not forgotten; because he gathered Elizabeth's and Zechariah's tears in his bottle, on this special day, he opened his book of remembrance and paid Zechariah a visit. Now, Zechariah will give God chance to perform not one miracle anymore but two by voicing out his doubts. He became dumb instantly. Who is he that can speak and it comes to pass when the lord has not spoken? Zechariah should have known better. If Abraham which I suppose he (Zechariah) reads every Sabbath could receive his own promise at the age of hundred then why can't his own be possible. This account is written down for our own admonition. For us to know that what God cannot do does not exist.
Therefore, no matter how long that sickness has afflicted you do not doubt if it can still be cured. If God says it then it is settled; he will do it, just believe for it. "For blessed is she who has believed that what the lord has promised to her will be accomplished". ( Luke 1:45). Instead of Zechariah's answer let us learn to say like Mary with child-like faith " I am your hand maid let it be done to me according to thy word". FOR WITH GOD NOTHING SHALL BE IMPOSSIBLE
