FOLLOW ME!

Text: Luke 5:1-11

Follow me is the command Jesus gave to Simon Peter and other disciples in Matthew 4. Although an instruction and a command, it was still their choice to obey or not. Many who received the same command gave excuses. Today we see Simon Peter's response. It is an example for us to follow. From verses 1-2 we understand that "the people pressed on Jesus". Jesus looked at them and perceived their need. He saw the hunger for the word of God. Immediately, he resourcefully improvised a pulpit by the shore of a lake. Borrowing Simon's ship he provided a platform.

Many people are in need of unadulterated word of God today, but it is fast becoming a scarce commodity. In every unlikely place Jesus always found a way to proclaim the good news. He proves truly that wherever our treasure is that is where our mind will be. Jesus' mind is set on the mandate given to him. Therefore 24/7 He finds ways to work for it.

Did you notice Simon Peter's response? He was willing, eager and ready. In a heartbeat he offered up his business premises, his time and his talent to Jesus. He didn't deliberate. Rather, it was almost a reflex action for him. He gave up everything for the Master's use. Now, when Jesus had left speaking, He said to him, "launch into the deep and let down your nets for a catch. Then Peter replied "... nevertheless at your command I will let down the net" and at his word, the fishes filled Peter's net to the point of breaking. Peter had toiled all night with nothing to show for it.

Hey! Why not lend Jesus your own ship today and come into a relationship with him. He will change the narratives for you. Jesus is full of unpredictable pleasant surprises. Peter bursts out; "depart from me for I am a sinful man". Indeed, No one can come face to face with the holy God and not feel inadequate. However, Jesus isn't done with Peter yet. He is looking for humble, meek, weak, contrite and inadequate people who are ready and willing like Peter to follow him. So, he says; "Peter, follow me and I will make you a fisher of men" (Matt 4:19).

Beloved, we also have been called to follow. What is your response? In Matthew 19:29, Jesus makes a promise "anyone who has left houses, brothers, sisters, father or mother, wife, children, lands for my name's sake shall receive an hundredfold and will have everlasting life". What are you waiting for? You must be eager like Peter, ready and willing not bored discontent and sloppy. Follow heartily, cheerfully and joyfully for there is plenty gain in salvation. God bless you!
