TEMPTED LIKE US BUT VICTORIOUS
Text: Luke 4:1-13
Jesus was tempted on all the three counts of human frailty according to the epistle of John; the cravings of the sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does; yet he turned all of them down and emerged victorious. By this victory He was able to counter Adam's failure in the garden. He has already begun to rubbish the devil before the final blow.
In this eternal war between light and darkness, We are dealing with an ancient creature who was gifted with wisdom by God himself. He knows the nature of man perfectly and understands how to defeat even the most valiant among us. He knows our weaknesses and strengths. Hence, he always tempts us in that our area of need. However, Jesus did not only give us victory but also shows us the way to victory. This victory is in James 4:7 "submit to God, resist the devil and he will flee". Jesus completely submitted even to the point of getting baptised (when there was obviously no need for it). Having submitted, he becomes filled and empowered by the holy spirit; then he could stand against the devil's devices and defeat him.
I Corinthians 10:12-13 promises; "No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; He will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you're tempted he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it". This wonderful promise here should be our forte. He is faithful and just. Having known our frailties, insecurities and inadequacies; He makes a way where there is no way and enables our soul to escape from the enemy's confinement.
Whatever it may be that the enemy is tempting you with, know this: for as long as you continue to resist that sin by totally committing and saying yes to the leading of Christ; you are on your way to victory. Everybody undergoes temptation. And temptations are really powerful. Brother James says it happens when we are "drawn away and enticed...". Yet, even at this point, it is God's will that we overcome. And we sure do overcome by trusting in the blood of the lamb and declaring the word of his testimony.
Nevertheless, beloved, you must know your limit this year. Do not take on more than you have received grace for. Flee whenever there is need to do so. Avoid unnecessary entanglements. Be intentional about resisting the lust of the flesh. The lust of the eyes and the pride of life. So that you will not be drawn away in your carelessness. Above all keep watch and pray.
Remember, Peter couldn't keep his eyes open to pray even for an hour unfortunately, he denies Jesus three times the same night three times. No believer plans to be overcome by temptation but we are overcome when we let down our guards and become less watchful in prayer. Cling unto 1Peter 5:8-9. And may the God of all Grace who called us into this eternal glory in Christ continually make us strong firm and steadfast through Christ. Amen!
