THE TEMPLE OLD AND NEW

Ezekiel 41:1-26

This bible text clearly contrasts the new temple from the old. Reading from verse  1, one is not left in doubts about God's attention to details. He is in charge of this building and will ensure its constructed to the letter.  The thickness of the various parts of the temple structure creates a picture of strength, stability and durability. God is not only going to restore Israel, Jerusalem and Zion, He is also going to make it stand firm forever.

Detailed measurements are taken  of the holy place and the most holy place; the lengths and breadths of the temple, outer and inner sanctuary; the walls adorned with artistically designed cherubs and palms. Note however, the absence of curtains between the holy place and the most holy place. There is no need for this since Jesus has opened the way. In addition, provisions are made for burnt offering. The table is carefully designated before the lord (v 22). Though the structures may have changed, the intent remains. God will always have a priest and a resting place among his people. It is the priest's duty to represent the people before God. He offers sacrifices and ensures that the sanctuary is kept alive in worship.

God is by this message showing Ezekiel the entire house of Israel and all believers, that he has no plan of ever abandoning his sanctuary.  Rather, He is making arrangements to ensure it stands firm like solid rock forever. Therefore, he has appointed in Jesus an everlasting priesthood. Those who come through him are also declared a kingdom of  priests of God forever (Revelations 5:10).

So what? God can never lie. What he purposes he brings to pass. The temple being spoken about here is not the second temple in Jerusalem that Jesus met, neither is it the present temple in Israel today. It is both symbolic and real but for a yet determinable future. This is that city with foundations whose architect and builder is  God himself (Hebrews 11:10) Jesus is the new order with much better and greater promises. Coming to him and staying put guarantees our everlasting worship with the saints of all ages in this glorious sanctuary yet to come.

Prayer: father you see the end from the beginning. In your infinite mercy and wisdom help us to reconcile the old with the new and deeply appreciate what you have done for us in Jesus. Amen!
