GOD CREATED MAN IN HIS OWN IMAGE
TEXT: GENESIS 1:20-2:4a
Scripture:
And God said, let us make man in our own image, after our likeness and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over cattle and over all the earth...So, God created man in his own image. In the image of God created he him. Male and female created he them. Genesis 1:26-27
Today, again the lord presents us with another infallible truth. He is the one who created mankind. He took counsel within himself and decided to create man to be like him. Every other creature, living and non living were commanded into being by the spoken word of his mouth. But God took a deeper thought when it came to the creation of man. Genesis 2;7, 18, 21-22 would elaborate further on the procedure of man's creation. While Genesis 5:2 tells us that mankind was named Adam the day he was created.
It would seem that God was going to replicate himself on earth in the form of man, to take care of the world he has created. Psalm 8:3 - 8, gives a clearer picture of what God has done here. He made man just a little lower than the heavenly beings. He crowned him with glory, honour and dominion. Therefore, there is no disputing the fact that God is the creator of not only heaven and earth but also all things that exist in it with a special interest in man.
In 1 Corinthians 11:7 man is the image and glory of God. In James 3:9 men are made in the similitude of God. Mark 10:6 concurs that from the beginning of creation, God made them male and female. More interesting is the testimony of Psalms 138:13-14- "for thou hast possessed my reins. Thou hast covered me in my mother's womb. I will praise you for I am fearfully and wonderfully made..." How apt! Even today, God is still in charge of creation of the new born. He ensures that the blueprint of humankind is not tampered or hampered. He intricately weaves man right in the womb to preserve his posterity. What is man indeed that you're mindful of him?
God's love compels him to share his world with humans whom he made. He made man perfect and unblemished because that is how he is. However, Genesis chapter 3 happened and there arose a twist in the tale. Nonetheless, God is omniscient. Even before his perfect creation was ruined, he had perfected a back up plan to restore man to his prior estate. In John chapter 3, Jesus happened. God's love again compelled him to do a second creation. Hence, a new Adam was born. All who believe in him according to verse 16 of John 3, will have everlasting life just as God planned it from the very beginning.
So what? Matthew 5:8 enjoins us "Be ye, therefore perfect, even as your father in heaven is perfect! ". For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them. (Ephesians 2:10).
PRAYER: Father, for grace to appreciate daily, the fact that we are gods (Ps 82:6) and cease from belittling ourselves. Out of the abundance of your love, you created us to share your universe with you. Help us to focus on the mandate you have given us in Christ that we may be your perfect children, subduing and dominating the world with your goodness to the glory of your holy name. Amen
