RISE AND PRAY
Text: Luke 22 : 39 - 53
Scripture:
And when he was at the place, he said unto them, pray that ye enter not into temptation (v40) And said unto them why sleep ye, rise and pray, lest ye enter into temptation (v 46)
Verse 39 tells us that Jesus came out and went as he was won't, to the Mount of Olives... And what does he do over there? He prays. It was his habit to rise up early in the morning, long before day- break to pray. Sometimes he withdraws to a lonely place to pray. It was his habit. He didn't suddenly learn it or resorted to prayer when dangers loomed. To maintain a close relationship with the father and connect with heaven, he was always praying, studying the word, teaching it and preaching the good news of the kingdom. This was Jesus' lifestyle. And when it was time for death, it was also at his habit point that death came calling.
Jesus was not demanding in his prayers. He was submissive. He prays in verse 42: "saying, father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me, nevertheless, not my will but thine, be done". Did you see that? Brother James tells us that the way to defeating Satan is to "submit to God, resist the devil and he will flee"(James 4:7). Jesus submitted completely to God's demands. Even after seeing with the spiritual eye what awaits him in the nearest moment; the horrible torture and death prepared for him, he didn't run away nor call down fire to devour his enemies, rather he asked God to strengthen him, if he must drink that cup. In this era of calling down "holy ghost fire" have we not missed so many deaths that would have brought us resurrection because we are scared of suffering? Many have left churches that preach cross before a crown for a more blessing pronouncing church but the question is how far with your faith?
Jesus' disciples couldn't give what they do not have. Prayer wasn't their habit. As Jesus carried them along to the place of prayer, their self life couldn't allow them participate in this spiritual exercise. Dear friend, have you given your life to Christ? Growing in your most holy faith is not an option, it is a must. Abiding in the Vine means reading and studying the word, watching unto prayer and living in total obedience to God's commands. Christian, seek not yet repose hear the guardian angel say, thou art in the midst of foes; watch and pray!!!
Father, for strength to be steadfast in prayer. For grace to abound in fastings and self denials. For wisdom to study your word and remain committed to you onto death, we ask in Jesus name. Amen!
Thank you for sending Jesus.
