SPIRITUAL BLINDNESS

Easter Monday, 2022.

Text: Luke 24: 13 - 35

The apostles were plunged into spiritual blindness. In fact that was their undoing. Had they been sensitive in the spirit, they wouldn't have suffered so much sorrow at the turn of events around Jesus. These unnamed disciples must have been exasperated. Not knowing what to do they left the company of others to travel to the nearby village. But Jesus the master is always ready to ho the extra mile with us. When we come to that cross road, he is there.

And so, He took them down memory lane. Starting from Moses in Genesis 3:15, He showed them that the messiah was the seed. In Numbers 21:9, He is the bronze serpent. In Isaiah 7:14 He is the virgin born Emmanuel. In Isaiah 9:6, he would be the wonderful counsellor and prince of peace. In Isaiah 40:10-11, He is the good shepherd. In Daniel's seventy weeks, He is the most Holy to be anointed. They came to see him also as the suffering servant of Isaiah 53. While Micah 7:20 shows him to be the truth promised to Jacob and the mercy of Abraham. In the words of Philip, He is the messiah, the Jesus Christ of Nazareth whom Moses and the prophets wrote about (John 1:45).

As He continued to open the scriptures to them, their spiritual blindness was rolling away gradually. Their hearts warmed up to the message and their spirit man was quickened. Hence, they didn't allow the stranger to go further. They wanted to hear more. Jesus had to finish what he begun. He set the meal of bread and wine before them and again showed himself as the bread of life. "This is my body which has been given up for you". Immediately, their eyes opened. That was the code. Only one man could say that, the master. Revelation dawned; " yes it's truly him" they must have cried. "Did our hearts not burn as he opened the scriptures to us?" Immediately they ran back to others to share the good news. "He is alive! We too have seen Him!

There is no other place to find Jesus other than the scriptures. But it will be a great danger to come face to face with the man of the scriptures and fail to recognise him.

Father, spiritual blindness is the bane of many Christians. We talk about you and we celebrate but often we don't see you in our celebrations or in our lives. We are too dull to hear you speak to our hearts. As we celebrate this Easter, help us to catch a deeper revelation of your person, that our hearts will be set on fire once again for you in Jesus name, Amen
