Building rightly

Text: 1 Corinthians 3:10-23,

Brother Paul uses the metaphor of building to explain the importance of building rightly in the context of the Christian faith. Here, Paul refers to himself as the wise builder who laid the foundation, which represents the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Other individuals are now building upon this foundation as they continue the work of spreading the message of Christ.

Verse 10-11: "By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as a wise builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should build with care. For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ."

Paul emphasizes that the foundation for the Christian faith is Christ alone. It is crucial to recognize that there is no other foundation upon which believers can build their faith. Moreso, the materials mentioned in verse 12 represent the different ways in which individuals contribute to the building process of their faith. Gold, silver, and costly stones signify valuable and enduring contributions, such as good works, character development, and acts of obedience. Wood, hay, and straw symbolize inferior and temporary contributions, like faith based on shallow motives, reliance on human wisdom, or superficial practices.

Furthermore, verses 13- 15 disclose that a day will come when all believers' works will be tested. The fire in this context represents God's judgment, which will assess the quality and substance of each person's work or contribution. The enduring contributions will withstand God's judgment and result in rewards while the inferior, in contrast will not withstand God's judgement. The overall implication is  that our contributions have eternal significance. This therefore, should inform our mindset in every single thing we do for and with God.

Nevertheless, though the builder may suffer the loss of these works, his salvation through faith in Christ will be secure ( vs 17). This shows that salvation is a gracious gift from God, not based on our works alone. However, it may be so hard to save the one whose work is burned up. It would be as difficult as snatching one from fire. There must be injuries!

Prayer: Father, for grace to appreciate the fact that you are almighty and all-knowing; and for the wisdom to follow you without biased motives in Jesus name Amen 🙏
